Sugar or Spice - Which is Nice?

How do I look?

I naturally compliment the people in my life. Perhaps because my mum is all about boosting others up, and maybe its because I know that it makes people feel good about themselves. As a person wanting to support others, it takes a few seconds to say but may have a lasting impact on someone’s day.

Yet, I think there is a balance between compliments and flattery. Sugar doesn't need to be anything else than what it is - sweet. I see compliments the same way. Its acknowledging someone with the intention to make them feel good about themselves with no other motive. Spice on the other hand adds flavour. Flattery, exaggerates the truth, or fabricates reality in order to make someone feel good to gain their favour.

Have you, or perhaps someone you know, given compliments only to gain the graces of their boss, or be seen in the best light to gain advantage? I have done this myself and watched others do it. Flattery will certainly get you somewhere – but is it where you want to be?

I've learned a few things along the way in my journey and would invite you to ask yourself - are you trying to make an impact or an impression? An impact is about the other person, and impression it about you. Choose wisely. At the end of the day, you are fooling no one. Even if you think you’re masterful at the art of flattery, people can genuinely feel authenticity. If your words don’t match your mind, incongruency spills over for all to see. It erodes respect and trust.

While sharing a compliment can bring a person joy – its important to be aware of your intentions…because one is altruistic and the other manipulation.

How are you sprinkling kindness in the world? Sugar or Spice?

PS: Did I tell you how lovely you all look today (hehehe)....but seriously though, fabulous fauxyladies!!
